We have seen several monumental transformations to Black Sun over the years. What started out as an Ecuadorian band led by drummer Nicolas Estrada, guitarist Christopher Grünberg, and bassist Santiago Salem, brought in Nino Laurenne on guitars. Nino was the producer-mixing engineer for their Silent Enemy release.
In addition, they add in the powerhouse and passionate vocalist Netta Laurenne, known for Smackbound and Laurenne/Louhimo. Could their self-titled album be the release that shows that this rebirth demonstrates the group’s full potential?
The album is a contender not just for being a strong representation of their evolved sound, but also a monster of a metal hit.
Reacting to the band’s refreshed direction: “The songwriting approach was completely refreshed when Nino and Netta joined. We were able to explore more complex rhythmical and heavier approaches. Having Netta on vocals allows us to explore wider ranges and navigate into different waters. We’re super excited for people to get to know our new sound.” Not that their previous efforts should be discarded as it luminates the founding for the group.
Whether it’s the wide-angle symphonic sound of “Drowned in Sin,” or the field and string ballad of “Stars,” the crunching clarity of the band’s music never suffers. Netta’s vocals shine both in focus and intensity. “Revolution Now” shows off the band’s melodic metal prowess.
With Black Sun, the band feels invincible.
