Marko Hietala
Roses from the Deep
Nuclear Blast
What does it take for the strong to stand out and the sheer power of talent prevail? Is it precision? Is it humility? This is what Marko Hietala explores on his latest release, Roses from the Deep. The former bassist and male vocalist for the legendary band, Nightwish, and current rhythm crusher for the band Tarot takes songwriting to an intricate and intimate level.
Here with his solo band, Hietala explores conceptual songwriting with flavorful lyrical imagery that explores science fiction and fantasy through the lens of heavy metal muscle. The orchestration naturally there, especially on the Celtic fueled “Dragon Must Die.”
Hietala pursues new elements like the Delta mythmaking of “The Devil You Know” or the pop undertones of “Impatient Zero.” All come with the construction of carefully conveyed guitar solos, orchestrated musical punctuation and a direction that guides the listener through a portal of dimensional prowess.
The title track sends us out into the abyss, fog covered, ballad laid, all transitioning into a patriotic solo that waves the flag of metal high. It’s a nod to the rules while going above conventionalism.
